How to Split a Coconut

  1. Using a strong, sharp instrument such as a screwdriver or a bradawl, pierce two of the coconut 'eyes'.
  2. Shake out the juice from the coconut.
  3. Bake the empty coconut in a hot oven for 15 minutes.
  4. Lay the baked coconut down on a board.
  5. Give the centre of the shell a sharp blow with a hammer; the shell should break cleanly in two.
